Primary education
OKAN in primary education consists of 1 or 2 welcome years (with possibly a follow-up year). The organizing school has a great deal of autonomy in how it organizes this. For example, they can include the children in an existing class, or create a separate class for the newcomers.

Secondary education
In OKAN in secondary education, pupils who speak foreign languages receive Dutch language lessons for 1 year. After that, they receive guidance in further education. In order to be admitted to OKAN in secondary education, pupils must meet the following conditions:

be a newcomer (stay in Belgium for a maximum of 1 year uninterrupted);

be at least 12 years old and not yet 18 years old on December 31 of the school year;

do not have Dutch as their home language or mother tongue;

do not speak or understand enough Dutch to be able to follow the lessons properly;

have been registered for a maximum of 9 months in an educational institution with Dutch as the language of instruction.
